FELONY FRANKS

lines_white.png

FELONY FRANKS is a family-owned Hot-Dog stand in Chicago that only hires felons. Owner Deno Andrews is an idealist who has made criminal rehabilitation his lifelong cause. But his father and co-owner Jim Andrews is no philanthropist. Jim sees the stand’s hiring practice as a business opportunity. In his experience, felons are harder workers. “We got ‘em by the balls. Where else they gonna go?” He supports his crew with tough love, and the proof is in the pudding, or hot dog, in this case - most of the employees at Felony Franks are grateful for the job and the respect they are given. Not to mention the camaraderie inherent in working with other ex-cons who understand what life after the pen is like, and even have a sense of humor about it. The biggest challenge for Felony Franks isn’t recidivism, though. It’s local Alderman Bob Fioretti, who is constantly looking for ways to use his political power to run the stand out of the neighborhood.  Lucky for the ex-cons at Felony Franks, the dogs, and the service, keep the doors open.

Based on a real-life father and son restaurant in Chicago.

THE GIPPS

Inspired by the true life formative years of Cameron Gipp AKA Big Gipp, The Gipps follows the unlikely suburban upbringing of a future hip-hop legend. Set in a historically significant suburb of Atlanta, populated by upper middle class African American families, entertainers, and civil rights leaders, Cameron’s childhood was at the center of the convergence of wealth, hope and history. It’s a story of what happens when the first generation of upper-middle class African American kids grow up in a neighborhood where they have more choices than their parents, more freedom than their grandparents, but still feel a connection to the projects on the next block over.

Based on real life experiences of rap icon, Big Gipp.

HOMESCHOOLED

If being black in the 90’s wasn’t tough enough, Jon and Raymond were also being homeschooled by their parents, who just so happened to be traveling Christian clowns.  To accommodate a hectic schedule, the boys would attend their local Church’s “homeschool group” several days a week - and so their cultural isolation was complete, until the day the church decided to open its doors to the ‘faithless masses’ in order to buffer its coffers.  The influx of homeschool children - ranging from military brats, to hippies, to delinquents who ran out of public schools to be expelled from - completely burst Jon and Raymond’s Godly bubble, and exposed them to a whole new concept of ‘normal.’ (Apparently normal kids don’t have a freezer full of balloon animals…)

Based on the real life childhood of Raymond and Jon Carr.

LADY PLUMBERS

With over 30 years in operation in Decatur, GA, M. Cary & Daughters have become known as the plumbers’ go-to plumbers. After years of shoveling... well, you know... this family runs a tight ship and speaks their mind. At M Cary & Daughters there’s never a shortage of attitudes that need adjusting, and big-hearted broads to remind the boys that crying is just another kind of leak.

Based on a real life female owned and operated plumbing business in the South.

OY, ME OF LITTLE FAITH

When a Jewish New York comedy writer is given a month to live, he goes on a spiritual journey that surprisingly ends with him not only not dying, but, even more surprisingly, taking over as pastor of a small, Pentecostal church in rural Georgia. Think of it as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel meets Facing the Giants.

Based on the life of Screenwriter, Michael Stark, the series chronicles how the least spiritual person on Earth, a self-absorbed, coastal elitist, could possibly get saved, and, in return, save the congregation in the reddest part of a red state. The tone strikes a delicate balance between sweet and irreverent, not preachy and never condescending toward the Spirit filled life and the sleepy, small southern town he finds himself falling for.

QUEEN OF COLLEGE

In an age where the rich and famous are bribing their children’s way into higher education, Meghan’s parents were quite the opposite. They knew better than to waste a dime sending their hard-partying Millennial daughter to college. Nevertheless, Meghan was determined to have the college experience, so when her high school bestie got accepted to the University of Georgia, Megan followed, diving headfirst into the college student lifestyle (minus the studying). Everyone assumed that she was not only enrolled at UGA, but that she was also a member of the sorority Sigma Kappa. Meghan quickly realized that her ability to pull off the life of a college student could benefit her in more ways than one. Socially, she had the school in the palm of her hands. She found herself attending football games in the student section, going to fraternity formals and date nights, participating in every UGA tradition you could think of, and even started attending some classes, all while avoiding thousands of dollars in debt in student loans for a piece of glorified paper.

Inspired by Meghan Reinertsen’s fun-filled freeloading four+ years at the University of Georgia.
